Happy Mother’s Day!
Artworks from ‘Esteemed,’ my collaborative art gallery and eventual fanfiction project about Toph’s coming of age into motherhood amongst the stressful duties of law enforcement. These images portray Toph’s early days of looking after Lin, and her friends encouraging her through it.As someone who wants nothing more in this life than to be a father some day, for now, I can only live vicariously through the lives of fictional parents.
This year, I am feeling personally conflicted, as I find myself admiring friends of mine who are mothers, many who’ve only recently become parents within the last year of two — while my own relationship with my mother is complex, marred by the selfish and illogical decisions she has made in recent years in regards to her own children. It makes me have this weird feeling like, “I wish my mom had made the choices you are making right now.” But my mom didn’t make those choices. And that’s kind of frustrating to reflect on.
But you know what? That doesn’t mean Mother’s Day isn’t worth celebrating. While I may not be very happy with my own mom right now, I’m trying to encourage the friends I have who are mothers to keep doing an awesome job, and keep up the no-doubt stressful work that goes into those early years, in particular.
Wish your own mothers and grandmother’s a Happy Mother’s Day, of course, but I strongly encourage you to really reach out to someone who isn’t YOUR mom and let them know that they are still awesome. You never know how much it might mean to someone to hear a peer encouraging their parenting.
Make sure they know they are not alone, and that they have people who are there to help them be the best parent they can be when the going gets tough — which it does. Even strong, independent women like Toph still need equally strong friends in their lives.
